The problem
SR 77 between Oracle Junction and Mammoth is a single lane in each direction for most of its length, carrying a mix of local, commuter, freight, and tourist traffic through Oracle and San Manuel. There are already a few short, staggered two-lane passing sections between San Manuel and Mammoth. Our ask is to complete the corridor to continuous two lanes each way, not just add lanes piecemeal. Limited passing opportunities on a two-lane rural highway are a well-documented contributor to head-on and run-off-road crashes. The fatal crashes on this stretch that have been covered in local news fit that pattern; we have asked ADOT for its full crash-type records for the corridor so we can say precisely how many do, rather than guess. A widening project was completed on the section of SR 77 just south of Oracle Junction; this segment north of it has never had the same study or investment.
Our approach
We’re building a factual, well-documented case, not just raising concern, but giving ADOT and elected officials the data and community backing to act on it.
1. Research & documentation
Compiling verified crash and traffic data directly from ADOT and federal sources, and requesting the detailed records that aren’t public by default.
2. Formal advocacy
Filing a documented safety concern with ADOT’s Southcentral District in Tucson, and engaging the Pinal County Supervisor, Central Arizona Governments (the regional planning body for Pinal County), and our state representative directly.
3. Community outreach
Reaching residents, commuters, and business owners along the corridor: the people who drive this road every day and know its risks firsthand. If that’s you, report a near-miss; those never show up in official data.
4. Building momentum
A public petition, a documented case backed by real data, and direct presentation to the agencies that can act on it.
