State Route 77 (SR 77 / Oracle Road) between Oracle Junction and Mammoth, Arizona is one lane each way for most of its length. It has a documented pattern of reckless passing, head-on collisions, and fatalities. We’re a grassroots coalition asking the Arizona Department of Transportation to widen it to two lanes each way, the entire corridor.

22 people killed in 15 years, on 27 miles of highway.

Federal crash data (NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System) shows 22 deaths in 19 fatal crashes on this corridor between 2010 and 2024, a documented, sourced count, on a stretch of highway that, as far as we have been able to find, has never been formally studied for widening. A widening project was already completed just south of Oracle Junction. This segment never got the same look.

The state’s own regional planners already agree this is a problem.

“SR 77 was brought up as a road of importance for freight movement as there is a lack of passing opportunities through the route and there are a large number of semi-trucks that utilize the route. SR 77 is also a major detour route if there are any closures on US 60, US 70, or I-10. There are stretches of roadways where there are no shoulders for the trucks to pull off on either side.”

Who we are

FixSR77 represents residents of Oracle, Mammoth, and San Manuel, the three communities this stretch of highway connects. We’re a community-driven effort, currently organizing as a nonprofit.

Why this stretch, why now

Federal crash data (NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System) shows 19 fatal crashes and 22 deaths on this corridor between 2010 and 2024. A widening project was already completed just south of Oracle Junction. This segment has, as far as we can find, never been formally studied or proposed. We think that gap deserves attention.

We hold every statistic on this site to the same standard: sourced, verifiable, and re-checked before we use it publicly. Where we’re not certain, we say so. When we get something wrong, we correct it in the open: see the corrections log.

What we’re doing about it

  • Requesting complete crash and safety data from ADOT
  • Filing a formal safety concern with ADOT’s Southcentral District (Tucson)
  • Engaging Pinal County, Central Arizona Governments, and state representatives
  • Building the public case for a traffic engineering study
  • Organizing the communities this road actually serves
